Emma was wondering why she can never answer the telephone. Her daddy explained that it's best if those older than her answer the phone. Emma, who is forever confident in her own abilities, continued to protest that, yes, she could do it, too.
And wouldn't ya know - the very next moment the phone rang. And Emma let out a gasp of excitement. Her daddy reached out to answer the phone - and then apparently had a 'brilliant' idea and a change of heart. Because after he pushed the button to answer it, he immedietely put the phone up to Emma's ear. Emma's eyes twinkled and her smile was wide as she chirped out a clear, "Hello!" A second later she answered, "No," but continued chatting. Since she was so confidently speaking to the other party on the phone, we relaxed a little and figured that it must be an older sister who was on the other end.
Sitting next to Emma, and after 2 or so minutes of listening to her chatter had passed, we heard her say, "No ... no ... But I want to talk to you ... no ... But don't YOU want to talk to ME? ... Yes, daddy is ... Okay, here, you can talk to daddy" and then handed the phone to her dad.
Expecting it to be one of the older girls, imagine Wayne's shock when he realized it was a co-worker of Ana's on the phone, and she had been asking to talk to Ana over and over again, but Emma was only interested in having a conversation with her.
Afterwards we laughed and laughed. And Emma kept saying, "But I thought it was Shasta!"
Silly girl. And silly daddy. I bet he probably won't be handing the phone to Emma to answer again till she's much older.
