For
several weeks this summer the boy was getting up at five thirty every morning,
Monday through Friday, and going to work with Wayne. His work day started at six thirty, with a
fifteen minute break at 10:00 with the men, and then back to work until noon,
when he came home for the day. He’s a worker, and enjoys the challenge of hard
physical labor. He was starting to get
bored hanging out at home each day (and getting himself into a bit of trouble
from time to time) so this was good for him to get out and wear himself out
with physical work and also be with other men but yet still be supervised by
his dad - and he actually enjoyed it.
Even better was getting a paycheck at the end of each week. He liked to tease his older sisters that
his hourly wage was more than some of them were making at their jobs. They cringed and said it wasn’t fair, but
they were proud of him and never failed to ask each day how his day at work had
gone. From the very beginning he had a
goal – to save money to buy another gun.
Of course, Wayne and I had to burst his bubble a bit and remind him that
reality bites sometimes, and that he would also be required to buy some other
things - like dog food for his dog as well as other necessities for
himself. I’ll never forget the look on
his face the first time after coming home from town and realizing just how much
money he had spent on a twenty pound bag of dog food. Yeah, real life does bite sometimes. But oh well, welcome to real life, son!
Now
that summer is over and school has started, his summer job is over. He worked hard and did a great job and I’m
sure he’ll be asked to return again next summer.
And
here’s some pictures of Colter and the new rifle he saved for and was able to
buy – he’s a happy boy...
