The bird

Our kids are notorious for rescuing injured baby birds & bunnies that they’ve found on our property. Every summer, for years & years, various kids have rescued and cared for baby birds that have fallen from their nests or bunnies that the dog has dragged from the woods. This summer has been no different…a few weeks ago the kids rescued from the dog a little bird that had fallen out of one of our pine trees. Unfortunately the dog had already killed one of the birds, but the kids managed to hold him back and rescue the second one. The kids pulled out the old bird cage, fed & watered the bird the best they could, and after a few days when he seemed to be doing better, they let him go. We weren’t sure at first if he would actually fly or not, but after flapping its wings several times and hopping around a bit on Colter’s hand, the little bird finally took flight. The kids held their breath as the bird crookedly flew to the top of a nearby tree and then was instantly joined by another bird that looked just like him! The two birds seemed to be overjoyed because they sure were making lots of chirping noises with one another…and down on the ground the kids were laughing and cheering and wondering if the two birds were brother & sister or perhaps mother & son. It sure sounded like it was a happy reunion for them…
We found our kitty sitting in the middle of the dining room table one day, mesmerized by the bird and I'm sure she would have loved to have gotten her paws into the cage...(and no, we do not tolerate the cat on the table...it was just one of those crazy moments that we happened upon and then ran for the camera...and the kitty never even moved or noticed we had walked into the room, so intent she was at watching the bird...)
In Colter's hand, just a few minutes before the birdie flew away...
